The 2013/2014 bulk rock salt contract has been finalized by the State’s Central Management Services. The City has purchased salt through the State’s Joint Purchasing Requisition program since 1992. This year, Cargill Salt, Inc. will be the City’s new vendor under the program. Their price per ton of rock salt is $57.41 for the 2013/14 season. This is almost 6.5 percent less than last season’s cost of $61.37 per ton!
For this coming season, the City requisitioned 4,250 tons of salt and budgeted $217,600 (estimating $64 per ton) for the 80 percent minimum delivery of 3,400 tons. Until last year, salt costs had risen steadily over the past years as this chart indicates:
