Two Arrests Made in Vine Shooting

On June 10, 2013, Champaign Police officers responded to the area of Fifth & Vine Streets for a report of a drive-by shooting. Reports indicate that suspects, from a silver-colored car, fired shots at a second vehicle. During the gunfire, several rounds struck a house in the 700 block of N. Fifth Street, but no one was injured.

Witnesses reported seeing occupants in a silver colored car roll down a window and fire rounds at a maroon-colored car, while driving in the area. During the call, officers spotted a silver Chevrolet Monte Carlo in an alley near the 400 block of N. Third Street.

When officers approached the vehicle, they observed evidence in the vehicle which was consistent with information reported by witnesses.

Further investigation revealed that the occupants of this vehicle fled to a home in the 300 block of East Hill Street. During a search of this residence, two males were located; KYANTAE WEATHERALL and AARON KIRBY. Police also recovered a loaded handgun from the property.

KYANTAE WEATHERALL, 19, Champaign, was arrested on a Champaign County warrant for Aggravated Battery. Weatherall was also arrested for Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm. He was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained prior to police contact. AARON KIRBY, 19, of Champaign, was arrested for Obstructing Justice by attempting to conceal evidence, which officers believe may have been connected to the shooting.
