The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will conduct a one-day household hazardous waste (HHW) collection event in Champaign-Urbana on Saturday, September 29, 2012 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. The HHW event will be held at The News-Gazette Distribution Center on Apollo Drive in Champaign. Traffic will enter the event at the intersection of North Market Street and East Olympian Drive in Champaign. The HHW collection event is FREE and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Illinois EPA. Co-sponsors include City of Urbana, City of Champaign, Village of Savoy, Champaign County, Champaign County Probation and Court Services, Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, Prairie Rivers Network, Sierra Club Prairie Group and MTD. The News-Gazette will host the event. Hick’s Gas and Interstate Batteries are local onsite vendors, and will be present to collect propane tanks and lead acid batteries respectively.
Neighborhood Code Compliance Environmental Inspector Leslie Mitchell attended a meeting at Urbana Public works to discuss the upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event. The co-sponsors of the event anticipate approximately 3,000 vehicles to pass through the event dropping off various materials. The City of Champaign will have two full time staff and two full time Police Officers to help with traffic and other duties as assigned. The EPA will have roughly 40 members of a Hazmat team that will be removing the materials from the attendees’ vehicles. Due to the high volume of participation, it is requested that neighbors coordinate their efforts and have a designee bring as many materials as possible from multiple households.
The event is coordinated and scheduled by the Illinois Environmental Inspection Agency. Additional information is available at the following link: http://www.epa.state.il.us/land/hazardous-waste/household-haz-waste/hhwc-schedule.html
