On Sunday, August 12, 2012, and Monday August 13, 2012, Champaign Signal and Lighting, Inc. will be installing detector loops in the pavement at the intersection as part of an Illinois Department of Transportation project replacing the traffic signal equipment at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Springfield Avenue. This work will take place at night between the hours of 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. over the two nights.
The work involves closing lanes of traffic, cutting small trenches into the pavement with concrete saws, placing wire in the pavement and then sealing the pavement back up. Conducting the work over two nights during off peak traffic hours, results in a safer project for both the public and the workers. It also minimizes the duration of the inconvenience to the general public.
Detector loops let the traffic signal know when vehicles are present and help determine when the lights turn green or red and how long the light stays green.
Questions regarding the project can be directed to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
