The third permit was issued under the City’s Mobile Food Truck Pilot Program last week. Daniel Krause and Jeremy Mandell are the owners and operators of “Cracked”, a food truck specializing in a variety of egg sandwiches. Krause and Mandell are recent graduates of the University of Illinois and began building their truck in Winnetka, Illinois this summer before returning to Champaign to open business. Before the pilot program, they intended to operate on private property at Fourth and Green Streets as well as at the Urbana Farmer’s Market and at private events. The pilot program allows them to expand their business to Downtown Champaign and other parts of Campustown as well. Similar to the Crave Truck, Cracked commonly tweets their location to a group of hungry followers. Their first two days in business on Neil Street at University Avenue saw a steady business, many perhaps from the City Building across the street. The other two permits under the pilot program have been issued to Crave and Burrito King. The Planning Department continues to monitor the program to see how well it works in Downtown and Campustown.
