“Goal Getters” Community Clean Up Project

On the hot afternoon of Monday, July 2, Champaign Unit 4 students participating in the “Goal Getters” Program worked with staff from the Neighborhood Services Department to remove litter from neighborhood streets.  The students were treated to pizza and a short presentation on Neighborhood Wellness from Code Compliance Manager David Oliver prior to hitting the streets in an area bounded by N. First, E. Washington, N. Fifth and E. Park to remove scattered litter.  Approximately 3 cubic yards of trash was collected and disposed of properly.  At the conclusion of the exercise, the students were polled on their observations.  Many commented on the amount and types of materials collected.  One student commented on how a storm drain was clogged and could possibly contribute to street flooding.  The most interesting comments focused on how the litter got there in the first place and what area residents are doing to address this concern.
