Staff to Watch Trash for Clean Commencement

The City of Champaign will be increasing enforcement in the University District beginning Monday, May 8, in preparation for University of Illinois commencement exercises. Each spring, Code Compliance inspectors are in the campus area daily to observe nuisance conditions, including overgrown vegetation, overflowing dumpsters, and dumpsters that have been previously emptied but left an overflow of trash on the ground.

To prevent dumpsters from overflowing, owners are encouraged to increase the number of times the dumpster is emptied or increase the size of the container. When inspectors observe a nuisance condition, a notice is posted on the property and the owner or management company are be contacted. There is a maximum of 24 hours to correct the violation. If the violation remains after the 24-hour period, the City will abate the nuisance and bill the owner for the abatement cost and charge an additional $100 administrative fee.

Advance notice was provided to campus area property owners via U.S. Mail and by email distribution through the Central Illinois Rental Property Professionals. We hope to achieve positive results again this year through our efforts to keep the University District aesthetically pleasing for all who will be attending the graduation ceremonies.
