Champaign Police Respond to Shots Fired Incident, One Arrest Made

On February 12, 2022, at approximately 2:07 p.m., Champaign Police were called for a report of shots fired at Marketplace Mall, 2000 N. Neil Street.

Upon police arrival, officers learned that a physical altercation between a male and female subject started inside the building near the food court and moved to the parking lot. During the altercation, Diamond Mitchell, 22, of Urbana, produced a firearm and fired one shot, striking a 19-year-old male involved in the altercation in the leg. Officers provided immediate aid until the victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Mitchell was taken into custody without incident and is being held at the Champaign County Correctional Center. No other injuries were reported. A loaded firearm was recovered on scene by officers.
