Champaign Police Investigating Shooting

On June 22, 2020, at approximately 4:03 p.m., Champaign Police responded to the area of Phillips Drive and Nelson Court for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers learned a 16-year-old male had been struck by gunfire and was taken to a local hospital by personal vehicle. He sustained two non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to his lower body.

The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was traveling on foot when a vehicle approached, and gunfire was exchanged between the two, striking the victim. No other injuries have been reported to police. This is not believed to be a random act of violence.

Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to contact the police department.  It is believed video footage may be of investigative assistance.

The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this time. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
