Suites at Third Achieves LEED Gold
The Suites at Third, located at 302 East John Street, is a new, 251-bed student apartment building constructed by American Campus Communities. The property opened to residents this past August. The project was approved with a Planned Development and the design of the building became a model for the subsequent Zone Champaign Zoning Ordinance amendments which is now required in the campus area. One of the requirements of the Planned Development was that the building be designed to be LEED certified with the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED Gold certification was recently received.
Sustainability was a driving initiative in the design process. Features include low emission paints throughout the building, low flow plumbing fixtures to reduce water usage, light efficiency in all common areas and units, outdoor courtyards for student gathering, and native plants that don’t require irrigation. The Suites at Third is currently leased at 100% occupancy.
