CITY OF CHAMPAIGN CONTINUES TO ADDRESS SNOWFALL
Champaign — The City of Champaign Public Works Department has worked continuous operations since Friday to address the snowfall that fell Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon. The City’s weather service indicates we received eight and one half inches of snow throughout the storm. City crews are are following the plans set forth in the City’s Snow and Ice Control Plan. Public Works crews completed the primary routes overnight and moved in to the secondary streets. A fifth crew will report to work at 11:15 a.m. this morning and will work until 11:30 p.m. tonight. By this time, all streets should have been addressed. On additional, voluntary crew will report at 11:15 p.m. tonight to address any missed areas and any new potential snowfall. Citizens who feel their street was missed during this timeframe, should contact the Public Works Department to report a missed street.
Due to the accumulation of more than two inches of snow, the Public Works Director activated the Sidewalk Snow Removal Ordinance at 9:00 a.m. today. Property owners affected in the Downtown and Campustown Areas have until 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2013. Additionally, the Emergency Snow Routes were activated at 8:00 a.m. today, vehicles parked on one of the routes have until 3:00 p.m. today to move their vehicles, or they will be relocated by City towing contractor. Citizens are encouraged to take appropriate precautions when driving: leave early, allow extra time to reach your destination, stay off the streets whenever possible, and be cautious around snowplows. Citizens are reminded not to place snow cleared from their property into City streets.
Public Works staff will continue to proactively monitor forecasts and to respond in a timely and efficient manner to threats of inclement weather. Citizens are encouraged to monitor the City’s website (www.ci.champaign.il.us/snow ), CGTV Cable Channel 5, and local media for information about street clearing activities. Whenever possible, Citizens are encouraged to keep City streets free of parked vehicles during this time to expedite plowing efforts and to utilize alternate off-street locations (such as the Hill Street Parking Deck in Downtown) in lieu of parking on the street.
