Conclusion of Fire Department’s Adult Explorers Program

The Champaign Fire Department Recruitment Team and the City of Champaign Human Resources Department are pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the 2022 Firefighter Adult Explorers Program (AEP).  The AEP was a partnership between the City of Champaign and the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission Workforce Development Program and ran for 6 weeks, ending September 7, 2022.  Six participants successfully completed the required evening AEP sessions and will be awarded five Adult Explorers preference points once the 2023-2025 Firefighter Eligibility List is final and approved by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners in February 2023.

The program was structured to create an awareness of career opportunities in the fire service field.  There was no cost to participate.  Sessions included: orientation, applications/schedule ride-a-longs/CPAT; generic practice test; firefighter experience and job information; ride-a-longs at Station1; EMS/prevention/community service; live fire training at IFSI and auto extrications at Fire Station 1 in Champaign.

The City would like to thank Lieutenant Todd Anderson, Firefighter Whitney Anderson, Firefighter Sam Freeland, and Firefighter Eddie Shellman for their contributions to making this another successful program.  Their experience and expertise provided these candidates an excellent glimpse into the firefighter profession.  This program would not be so successful without each of their contributions.

The deadline for the 2022 Firefighter Recruitment Testing application process is September 23, written exams completed by October 10, and oral interviews scheduled for November 8 and 9, 2022.
