On Friday, March 27, members of the Equity & Engagement Department’s Community Safety & Justice Division attended Midnight Basketball at the Leonard Recreation Center. Hosted by Youth for Christ, Midnight Basketball is a faith-based gun violence prevention initiative that provides young people with a safe and welcoming space to gather, build positive relationships, and engage in structured activities centered around fellowship and basketball.
The event brought together several partners from the City of Champaign’s Gun Violence Reduction Blueprint, including First Followers, Acclivus Inc., and Street College, all of whom contributed to creating a supportive and community-focused environment. Deputy Mayor Will Kyles was also in attendance, along with representatives from A Cry for You, demonstrating strong community leadership and a shared commitment to youth engagement and violence prevention.
Midnight Basketball continues to serve as an important outlet for local youth by fostering mentorship, promoting positive decision-making, and strengthening connections between community organizations and the individuals they serve.
