Neighborhood Services Department’s Housing Rehab Programs Help Reduce Radon in Homes

Did you know: The City’s housing rehab programs help reduce radon levels in qualifying homes. January is National Radon Action Month, a time to highlight the importance of protecting families from radon exposure in their homes. Radon is a naturally occurring, odorless gas that can seep into houses through the ground and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

Beginning in April 2024, radon testing and mitigation became a requirement for programs funded through the Community Development Block Grant.  When elevated radon levels are identified, a radon mitigation system is installed to help safely reduce indoor radon concentrations and improve overall indoor air quality.

Since the requirement took effect, the Neighborhood Programs Division completed 15 radon mitigation installations, making homes safer and healthier for residents.  As we recognize National Radon Action Month, this work is an important reminder that home safety goes beyond what we can see.  Housing rehab programs not only address visible repair needs, but also help protect residents from hidden environmental hazards like radon.
