Champaign Police were notified on September 30, 2025, that a federal warrant had been issued for the arrest of Benny Loveless, 44, of Champaign, due to violations of his federal probation. This information was shared with patrol officers, following standard procedure for wanted persons believed to reside in the community. As a Champaign Police officer was on patrol on October 3, 2025, Loveless was spotted in the 300 block of N. Neil Street and detained on that federal warrant. Following his detainment, representatives with the United States Marshals Service arrived at the Champaign Police Department to arrest Loveless, taking him into federal custody.
Champaign Police are aware that photos of the arrest are being circulated on social media, along with text that implies the arrest involved representatives from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. These claims do not align with the facts of the arrest. The Champaign Police Department complies with all state laws in service to the residents of Champaign. This includes the Illinois TRUST Act, which precludes local law enforcement from assisting federal authorities with civil immigration enforcement.
