Champaign Police were dispatched to the intersection of Bloomington Road and Mattis Avenue at 7:30 p.m. on August 16, 2025, following multiple reports of a single-vehicle crash with injuries. On-scene, officers found a 37-year-old man from Mahomet who had left the roadway on his motorcycle, striking a light pole. The motorcyclist had suffered multiple potentially life-threatening injuries and was quickly transported to an area hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, he sadly passed away a short time later.
Champaign Police briefly shut down some lanes of traffic at the intersection to conduct a crash investigation and to ensure safety for the tow company conducting cleanup of the wrecked vehicle. All lanes have been reopened at this time. Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance in the crash investigation. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
