The Champaign Police Department conducted a traffic enforcement campaign to reduce impaired driving and address seatbelt violations from June 20 to July 7, reminding motorists to share the road and ensure that everyone gets home safely around the Independence Day holiday. The effort was conducted by Champaign Police in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies.
During the campaign, in addition to proactive traffic monitoring by officers working regular shifts, Champaign Police also committed personnel to 17 hours of dedicated traffic enforcement. This included promoting a visible presence and placing a focus on arterial routes, especially in areas where they impact neighborhoods. During this 18-day period, efforts by Champaign Police led to:
- 11 arrests for Driving Under the Influence
- 2 warnings and 6 citations for speeding
- 3 citations for driving without insurance
- 2 citations for driving without a valid license
- 2 citations for moving violations
- 1 warning and 1 citation for equipment violations
This enforcement campaign was made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
