Street Crimes Task Force Makes Gun-Related Arrest

On July 24, 2020, at approximately 3:14 p.m., the Champaign County Street Crimes Task Force arrested 18-year-old Joaquin Hughes in the 2000 block of Moreland Boulevard in Champaign on an outstanding arrest warrant for Unlawful Possession of a Handgun. This warrant was obtained by the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office on July 21, 2020, as part of a collaborative, ongoing criminal investigation with the Street Crimes Task Force into individuals illegally possessing firearms.  Bond on the warrant was set at $25,000.

At approximately 3:05 p.m., a vehicle in which Hughes was an occupant was stopped by police, at which time 3 of the 5 occupants fled from the vehicle.  Hughes was arrested without incident at the vehicle.  One of the individuals who had fled from the vehicle, identified as 18-year-old Tyrone Fulwiley of Champaign, was arrested after a foot chase and had a large, illegal amount of suspected cannabis on his person.  A backpack was also located during this incident that contained a large, illegal amount of suspected cannabis and a handgun.  Both Hughes and Fulwiley were taken to the Champaign County Correctional Center and are awaiting future court proceedings.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
