The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a duplex at 1618 W Union St., Wednesday, April 1, 2020, at 12:56 a.m. Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire in the residence.
Firefighters responded to a report from a neighbor of a fire in the single-story duplex. Once on the scene, fire crews reported smoke coming from one unit of the duplex. Firefighters deployed hose lines into the home and quickly extinguished the fire that had only started to extend beyond a bedroom.
The cause of this fire is undetermined as investigators remain on the scene conducting their investigation. There were no firefighter injuries reported. No one was home in the unit at the time of the fire. The occupants will be displaced as a result of the damage.
The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan. Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count.
