On Saturday, April 14, employees of the Fire Department and Neighborhood Services Department, along with community and Red Cross volunteers, went door-to-door in a west Champaign neighborhood offering to check smoke alarms and install free smoke alarms in homes that needed them.
The Smoke Alarm Blitz included approximately 314 homes within the boundaries Kirby Avenue to the south; William Street to the north; Mattis Avenue to the east; and Crescent Drive to the west. Installation crews were in 56 homes where they installed 64 combination smoke / carbon monoxide alarms and 226 smoke alarms.
