Champaign Police Thanksgiving Seat Belt Enforcement

The Champaign Police Department conducted seat belt enforcement from November 17-27, as part of the nationwide Click It or Ticket mobilization. The Department joined other state and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois in an effort to help reduce highway fatalities by reinforcing to motorists the importance of buckling up and not driving impaired. During the ten-day mobilization, two police details were implemented. The following citations were issued to motorists who were not in driving compliance:

  • 5 seat belt citations
  • 4 cell phone citations
  • 1 uninsured motorist citation

The annual Click It or Ticket mobilization aims to reduce motor vehicle crashes and resulting injuries and fatalities, and serves as a reminder to motorists that not wearing your seat belt is a primary offense. Illinois Law requires all vehicle occupants, regardless of seating position, to use a properly adjusted and fastened seat belt. Fines start at $25 and may vary depending on associated court costs and number of violations.
