The City and the West Washington Street Steering Committee hosted an Open House meeting on January 12 to present the proposed concept plans for Phase 2 of the West Washington Street Drainage Improvements project. The project includes the construction of new stormwater detention basins along Glenn Park Drive between Mattis Avenue and Miller Avenue. Once completed, the Phase 2 project will operate together with the recently completed detention basin located at Robinson Court to hold floodwater from the watershed.
Two concept plans were presented to the 44 watershed residents who attended the Open House. The first concept plan features a larger detention basin and includes the removal of the westbound leg of Glenn Park Drive. The second concept plan features a smaller detention basin and converts the westbound leg of Glenn Park Drive into a two-way street. The watershed residents at the Open House overwhelmingly preferred Concept Plan 1 primarily because it provides 35 percent more stormwater storage over Concept Plan 2. Both concept plans are presented below.
As with previous stormwater improvement projects, Phase 2 will feature a variety of amenities including a gazebo, benches, drinking fountain, walk path, decorative fencing, ornamental lighting, and rain gardens with native plantings. Pending Council approval of one of the concept plans, final design is scheduled to start in the spring of 2015 with an anticipated (final design) completion date of December 2015.
