City of Champaign’s Public Works and Neighborhood Services collaborated with local non-profit agencies and Campus Property Management to host a successful Move In/Out Recycle and Reuse Event on August 9, thanks to the efforts put forth by Jake Reese, Recycling Intern, David Oliver, Code Compliance Manager, and Nichole Millage, Environmental Sustainability Specialist.
This was the fourth year the City has hosted this event. Once again, Campus Property Management donated a parking lot for this event, but this year it was held at 512 S. Third St. This new location was easy for students, renters, and property owners to find in order to donate their reusable items. City staff, along with the help of Habitat for Humanity ReStore, collected furniture, electronics, kitchen accessories, clothes, food, and a lot of other items that would have gone to the landfill.
Additionally, items were donated to Eastern Illinois Foodbank and The Salvation Army. The August Move In/Out Recycle and Reuse Event demonstrates the City’s commitment to keeping campus clean while promoting sustainability.
The City’s Move In/Out Cardboard Recycling Event was a success this year with the City diverting approximately 4,200 pounds of cardboard from the landfill. The event was held from August 15-25, and more locations were added this year with 11 dumpster spread across the campus-town area.
