On May 16, 2014, the City’s Environmental Sustainability Specialist, Nichole Millage and recycling intern, Aria Perbohner, along with Champaign County Recycling Coordinator, Susan Monte, City of Urbana Environmental Sustainability Manager, Scott Tess, City of Urbana Recycling Coordinator, Courtney Rushforth, and U of I Zero Waste Coordinator, Bart Bartels, took a tour of local recycling facilities.
Their first stop was to Community Resource Inc., 1201 E. University Avenue in Urbana. Here they observed the large bailing machine used to compact the various recyclables that come through the facility, including plastics, aluminum cans, cardboard, and much more.
Afterwards they went over to ABC Sanitary Hauling and Recycling, 313 W. Eureka Street in Champaign. There they observed the monumental task of employees manually sorting through mixed recyclables, which is “a never ending process” for them, according to their Operations Manager, Gary Thornton.
