South Side Elementary Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Plan Underway

The South Side Elementary SRTS Plan Steering Committee met on Tuesday, January 14th to discuss existing conditions around the school and analysis conducted to date. The committee includes representatives from the Police, Public Works, and Planning & Development Departments, as well as Champaign Unit 4 Schools and the Champaign County Regional Plan Commission. The committee discussed issues with current traffic and pedestrian circulation and reviewed data on crash frequency and pedestrian and bicyclist volume. The committee will continue to meet monthly as a full SRTS plan is developed for South Side Elementary. The South Side SRTS Plan is receiving primary funding through the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.

The final SRTS plan for South Side Elementary must address a number of issues, included continued drop-off and pick-up activity in restricted zones.
