Champaign Police were dispatched to the 400 block of W. Beardsley Avenue at 10:04 p.m. on April 6, 2026, after a report of a shooting with injuries in the area. On-scene, officers located an 18-year-old Champaign man with an apparent gunshot wound to the leg. Emergency medical care was administered by officers and the Champaign Fire Department until the victim could be transported to a local hospital. The man was treated for his injuries and released. He continues to recover.
The initial investigation indicates that the man was outside in the 400 block of West Beardsley Avenue when an unknown subject or subjects opened fire, injuring him. The reason for the gunfire remains unknown at this time, but investigators are pursuing every lead and seeking assistance from the community to determine what led to this incident and who is responsible. Property damage was reported to one residence in relation to this incident.
Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
