The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a large multi-family apartment building in the 700 block of S Third St., Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 11:41 p.m. Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
Firefighters responded to a report of a mattress on fire on the third floor of this apartment building. Once on the scene, fire crews found a single sprinkler head activated on the third floor that had largely extinguished this small mattress fire. Firefighters used a fire extinguisher to extinguish any remaining fire and helped to remove smoke from the building.
The cause of this fire was determined to be accidental and was attributed to a candle. There were no firefighter or occupant injuries reported.
