Building a Strong Foundation: The City’s New Co-Responder Team

The City’s new Co-Responder Team has been actively building the skills and partnerships needed to support residents through a compassionate, community-centered response. The team recently completed Mental Health First Aid certification led by Dr. Kristal Hines, alongside members of the Police Department, Fire Department, and METCAD. The Co-Responder Team also participated in substance use response training with Dr. Aiden Ferguson, focusing on recognizing signs of substance use and administering Narcan.

The Co-Responder Team connected with Deputy Fire Chief Jessup, CPD Lt. Fisher, Deputy Chief of Administration Kevin Olmstead, Peoria Chief of Police Eric Echevarria, East St. Louis Fire Chief Derrick Burns, and members of the Peoria Co-Responder Team to share insights and best practices. In addition, the Co-Responder Team recently hosted a providers’ open house, welcoming nearly 30 local service providers to meet the team and strengthen collaboration. During the event, Dr. Parnell spoke with attendees about the importance of coordinated care and community partnership.

Through continued training, collaboration, and community engagement, the Co-Responder Team is building a strong foundation to provide responsive, supportive care for residents across our community.
