This afternoon, the City of Champaign was made aware of a spill, of what was later confirmed to be agricultural lime, along southbound Mattis Ave. between Hedge Rd. and Kirby Ave. The product was being transported by private truck from the Illinois American Water (IAWC) Plant. Public Works staff immediately contacted the trucking company and IAWC. We also dispatched a flusher truck to begin clearing off the road.
Traffic was temporarily restricted at the intersection of Kirby Ave. and Mattis Ave. due to its size and in order to fully flush it. Public Works has been through the majority of the area one time to flush through and will complete one more cycle as they travel back north. Due to the amount spilled, there may be leftover staining on the road.
Motorists are advised that if you traveled southbound through the area you should rinse the material off of your vehicle at your earliest convenience.
