Champaign Police Encourage Drivers to Slow Down Ahead of Speed Awareness Day

Agency to Join Statewide Enforcement Effort to Discourage Speeding on July 23

The Champaign Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and hundreds of local law enforcement agencies across the state to focus on speeding ahead of Speed Awareness Day, which will be marked on July 23, 2025. This event has been promoted across Illinois since 2016 and encourages drivers to slow down and make our roadways safer for everyone.

“The time you save by speeding is not worth the risk you pose to yourself and others on the road,” said Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. “Champaign Police will continue to promote a visible traffic enforcement presence on Speed Awareness Day, reminding drivers that speeding catches up with you.”

Speed Awareness Day addresses the issues of excessive speeding, including reducing crashes, preventing injuries, and saving lives through proactive enforcement and public awareness. During the campaign, officers will promote visible enforcement of Illinois law in an effort to encourage drivers to follow the posted speed limit. Those found to be speeding or violating other rules of the road will be issued citations and written warnings, when appropriate. Efforts to address these concerns in Champaign will focus on arterial routes.

This traffic safety campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
