The Champaign Police Department conducted a traffic campaign to reduce distracted driving throughout the month of April, reminding motorists to pay attention behind the wheel. The enforcement effort was conducted by Champaign Police in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies in a coordinated effort to reduce driver distraction in recognition of Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
During the campaign, Champaign Police committed officers to 28 hours of dedicated enforcement with a focus on arterial routes, especially in areas where they impact neighborhoods. In April, these efforts by Champaign Police yielded:
- 26 citations for distracted driving
- 5 citations for speeding
- 4 citations for driving without insurance
- 2 citations for driving without a valid license
- 2 citations for expired registration
The Illinois distracted driving campaign was made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
