The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a commercial and multi-family apartment building in the 100 block of E. University Ave., Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at 8:40 p.m. Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
Firefighters responded to an automatic alarm in this two-story building. Once on the scene, crews reported the sprinkler system had activated and upgraded the incident to a working fire. Firefighters were able to locate a small fire between the first floor commercial space and second floor residences. Crews deployed a single hose line and were able to keep the fire contained to its area of origin.
The cause of this fire is accidental and was attributed to energized electrical equipment. There were no firefighter or occupant injuries reported.
