Case Update: Homicide Investigation – 1100 Block of N. Third Street

Champaign Police were contacted by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office on the evening of March 17, 2025, with a notification that the victim of a March 16, 2025, shooting incident had tragically died. At the request of the Champaign County Coroner’s Office, Champaign Police can share that the victim was identified as Anthony Miller, 31, of Champaign. Miller was initially listed in stable condition after surgery but succumbed to his injuries at 5:15 p.m. on March 17, 2025. The incident has been reclassified as a Homicide investigation.

Text of Original News Release 3/16/25, 8:45 p.m.:

Champaign Police were dispatched at 3:03 p.m. to the 1100 block of N. Third Street following a report of a shooting with injuries. On-scene, officers located a vehicle with damage from gunfire and a 31-year-old Champaign man inside with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. The officers immediately administered emergency medical aid until the man could be transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The initial investigation indicates that the victim was inside the vehicle when 22-year-old Zaire Herman of Champaign opened fire, striking the victim. Herman then fled on foot. As officers conducted a sweep of the area, Herman was located nearby and arrested for his role in this incident. Herman faces initial charges including Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Aggravated Assault, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Additional charges may be added as the investigation continues.

Even as an arrest has been made, the investigation remains ongoing. Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
