Police Chief Appoints Gregory Manzana to Deputy Police Chief

Champaign Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler is pleased to announce the appointment of a long-serving member of the Champaign Police Department to serve as Deputy Chief of Police.

“The Champaign Police Department has a history of leadership in our region and across our profession,” said Tyler. “Today, I am proud to continue that legacy through the promotion of an exceptional leader by promoting Gregory Manzana to the role of Deputy Chief of Police.”

Gregory Manzana has been appointed as Deputy Chief of Operations. He will oversee the Department’s Uniform Patrol Division and specialized units including the Crisis Intervention Team, SWAT, Field Training, Explosive Ordinance Disposal, and K-9 Units. The Patrol Division is the first responder to all calls for service, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. This includes preliminary investigations, accident investigations, order maintenance, traffic enforcement, and others. The Patrol Division handles more than 50,000 calls for service each year. The Division is staffed with 75 officers, 14 Sergeants, four Lieutenants, and one K-9 officer. Manzana has served with the Champaign Police Department since 2002. Prior to his appointment to Deputy Chief of Operations, he held the ranks of Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Patrol Officer. He has also served as a member of the department’s SWAT Team, the Field Training Unit, the High-Tech Crime Unit, and in the Champaign Police Honor Guard.

Manzana holds an Associate of Arts Degree from Parkland College, a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Illinois, and attended the Northwestern University Executive Management Program as well as the School of Staff and Command, where he received the Franklin M. Kreml Leadership Award.

Deputy Chief Manzana begins his appointment on January 13, 2025.
