The Champaign Police Department conducted a traffic safety campaign throughout the month of July, reminding motorists to slow down to save lives. The speed enforcement effort was conducted by Champaign Police in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies in a coordinated effort to reduce speeds and increase safety on our streets.
During the campaign, Champaign Police committed officers to 44 hours of dedicated traffic enforcement with a focus on arterial routes, especially in areas where they impact neighborhoods. In July, enforcement efforts by Champaign Police yielded:
- 46 citations and 2 written warnings for speeding
- 1 child safety seat violation
- 1 felony arrest and illegal gun recovery
- 3 citations issued for driving without a valid license
- 4 citations issued for expired registration
- 1 warning for improper lane usage
The speed enforcement effort was made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
