On June 29, 2024, Angel’s Youth Center hosted their fourth annual “Beat the Streets” event at Champaign’s Centennial Park. Executive Director Angelica Johnson said the event was created to educate kids about the dangers of gun violence, and to encourage consideration for their future.
Angel’s Youth Center welcomed nearly 50 kids from throughout Central Illinois to Centennial Park; community residents leaving Sholem Aquatic Center even stopped by to take part in the event. This event featured fun games and activities to bring interaction and awareness to this serious message. Mentors with the center, parents, and Champaign Police came together to share their stories and expertise. Equity and Engagement staff participated in community building and informally talked to attendees about work being done at the City.
