Shooting Investigation – 900-Block of Newcastle Drive

Champaign Police were dispatched at 11:52 a.m. on May 24, 2023, to the 900 block of Newcastle Drive for a report of a shooting with injuries. Upon arrival, officers located a 21-year-old woman from Champaign who reported that she had been the victim of a domestic battery and had shot the other party, a 24-year-old male from Champaign, during the struggle. The man left the scene following the incident. Police have interviewed the male party, who also claims to have been the victim of domestic battery in this incident.

The initial investigation indicated that the two parties had been involved in a domestic dispute that escalated into a physical altercation. The female subject produced a handgun and the firearm discharged. According to witnesses on-scene, the male was injured in the discharge. The male then left the scene in a vehicle. The female subject was confirmed to lawfully own the firearm.

Officers continue to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
