Champaign Police were dispatched at 5:33 p.m. on January 5, 2023, to the 1200 block of Garden Hills Drive for a report of a Shooting with Injuries. Upon arrival, officers located a 21-year-old male victim from Champaign suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds to the chest. Personnel from the Champaign Police and Fire Departments immediately rendered medical aid until he could be transported by ambulance to an area hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries.
The initial investigation indicated that the victim was walking in the street with an unidentified male subject when the man opened fire, striking the victim. The unknown subject then fled the scene on foot. Officers conducted a thorough canvass of the surrounding area to locate physical evidence, and they continue to seek witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. During the canvass, multiple shell casings were located, and damage was reported to two houses. Any resident or business in the nearby area with exterior surveillance camera systems is encouraged to notify the police department. No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
