Champaign Police Respond to Report of Suspicious Package

Traffic Reopened Near Springfield Avenue & Staley Road

At approximately 7:00 a.m. on Friday, September 2, 2022, the Champaign Police Department responded to a call for a suspicious item at a business near the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Staley Road. The item was described as a large piece of unattended luggage located near highly flammable materials. The Champaign Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit responded to the scene and thoroughly inspected the item. Following the inspection, the item was found to be benign and removed from the area.

This incident led to a brief reroute of traffic near the intersection of Springfield and Staley for the safety of the public. While all routes have been reopened, traffic backups could persist in the area throughout the morning commute.
