Statement by Champaign Police

The safety of our students and community is the City’s top priority, and Champaign Police are continuing to actively investigate recent events that have involved Centennial High School, including a threatening social media post that began circulating Wednesday, September 22. Police are also aware of other rumors that are suggesting additional school threats have been made. At this time, those reports are unsubstantiated and the only active intelligence law enforcement has is related to the social media post that began circulating on September 22. Any community member who may have information to indicate otherwise is encouraged to provide it to Champaign Police.

The Champaign Police Department maintains a strong partnership with the Unit 4 School District and remains in constant communication with their administration. Police will continue to provide additional patrol and investigative resources to Centennial High School and the nearby area into next week to ensure a visible law enforcement presence. These steps are being taken as proactive, precautionary measures. We will continue to evaluate our response as additional information is received.

We assure our community that all threats and menacing social media posts that are made towards Champaign Schools are thoroughly investigated and will not be tolerated, regardless of the intent or nature behind them. All students, staff, faculty, and parents deserve positive and safe learning environments, and we strongly encourage anyone who has information that would benefit law enforcement or school safety to come forward and provide it.

Champaign Police will continue to share information with the public as appropriate.
