Accidental Discharge of a Firearm – 600 block of South Crescent Drive

To address misinformation currently circulating through social media, the Champaign Police Department is releasing information in relation to a tragic, accidental discharge of a firearm by a minor that occurred on Friday, April 23.  

On April 23, 2021, at approximately 9:10 a.m., Champaign Police responded to a private residence in the 600 block of South Crescent Drive for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a 3-year-old boy with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The child was transported to an area hospital and is in stable condition.

Preliminary information suggests the child gained access to an unsecured firearm and accidentally discharged it once into his midsection. The parents are cooperating with law enforcement, and there have been no arrests. Although the incident remains under investigation, police are not looking for additional suspects.
