Arrest Made in Overnight Shots Fired Investigation

On Jan. 25, 2021, at approximately 10:36 p.m., Champaign Police responded to the 1500 block of West Kirby Avenue for reports of a shots fired. Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple spent shell casings outside of a private residence. No injuries were reported to police.

The preliminary investigation identified the offender as Daniel Carruthers, 37, of Champaign, who arrived at the residence in violation of an order of protection. The offender made several verbal threats towards the victim inside and attempted to gain entry by shooting out the front door deadbolt, which failed. The investigation by Champaign Police continued for a period of a time. This led to the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office obtaining an arrest warrant for the offense of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm. Bond on the warrant was set at $500,000.

In the early morning of Jan. 26, Carruthers was apprehended by Champaign Police in the area of 1000 North 600 East rural Champaign County. In addition to Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, Carruthers was arrested for Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Violation of Order of Protection. Carruthers was transported to the Champaign County Satellite Jail where he is awaiting future court proceedings.
