The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a home at 1621 W. Church St., Saturday, March 21, 2020, at 3:35 p.m. Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire in the single-family home.
Firefighters responded to a report from a passerby of a fire in the single-story residence. Once on the scene, fire crews reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the side of the home. Firefighters deployed hose lines into the home and quickly extinguished the fire that had extended into multiple rooms.
The cause of this fire is undetermined as investigators remain on the scene conducting their investigation. There were no firefighter injuries reported. No one was home at the time of the fire. The occupants will be displaced as a result of the damage.
The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to maintain a working smoke alarm in their place of residence and to have and practice a home escape plan. Smoke alarms can provide early notification when seconds count.
