Today, at approximately 11:56 a.m., a School Resource Officer working at Centennial High School identified a 16-year-old male student for his alleged involvement in a theft investigation. The student was escorted outside to a private location where he was arrested without incident by the School Resource Officer.
As part of the arrest procedure, the student was searched, and the School Resource Officer located a loaded handgun and ammunition in his backpack.
The juvenile was taken to the Champaign Police Department for additional questioning and then transported to the Champaign County Juvenile Detention Center where he is awaiting future court proceedings.
Champaign Police have no additional information to suggest there is any immediate threat to our area schools.
