708 S Sixth Street Project Commences at Green and Sixth Streets

708 S Sixth Street Project Commences at Green and Sixth Streets

On Monday, November 5, 2018 CORE Spaces and general contractor Findorff will begin implementation of traffic control measures in preparation for demolition of existing buildings at 601, 603, 605 E Green and 704, 706, 708, 710 S Sixth Street and construction of a 17-story structure at 708 S Sixth Street called the Hub.

To accommodate construction staging, the sidewalk and loading zones adjacent to the building footprint on Sixth Street will be closed for the duration of the project. Eastbound traffic on Green Street will be shifted to the center lane to accommodate pedestrian traffic and allow Green Street sidewalks to remain open for the duration of the project. The westbound lane will be unaffected by the project. Left turns onto Sixth Street for westbound Green St traffic will be prohibited.
Southbound traffic and all parking on Sixth Street will be maintained during the project except during the following events:
– tower crane set-up (2-3 days in late January 2019)
– mat slab concrete pour for the building foundation (one-day in late February 2019)
– tower crane dismantle (2-3 days in late January 2020)

On or around November 9th, the east-west alley between 704 & 706 S Sixth will be closed for public use. CORE Spaces, Findorff, and the City of Champaign will continue to work with affected properties to provide for the relocation of lost parking spaces, the efficient collection of waste, and access to loading zones. The contractor will work towards reopening the alley as soon as construction staging, and safety consideration allows. Construction at 708 S Sixth Street is scheduled to conclude in August 2020.

The City of Champaign reminds all residents and visitors that all Campustown businesses will be open during this project and encourages the public to use caution in navigating around the project site.
