Downtown Traffic Counts

On October 11, the City of Champaign began working with the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission to perform traffic counts at three intersections in Downtown Champaign:  Walnut/Main, Walnut/Washington, and Neil/Main.  Traffic counts will be taken over a three-week period using video cameras that will quickly count both pedestrians and vehicles.  The camera method is superior to the standard pneumatic road tube that only provides reliable counts for vehicular traffic.  The traffic counting camera will be left up at each intersection for a 24-hour period.  Photos of the camera are shown below.

It is anticipated that the traffic counts will help the City perform further analysis for improving circulation patterns around Downtown as a result of the Neil Street Corridor Plan and the pending Downtown Plaza Plan.
