Arrest Warrant Issued for N. Hickory Street Homicide

Homicide Suspect Shoen Russell, 48, of Champaign.

An arrest warrant has been issued for 48-year-old Shoen Russell (Champaign) for charges of First Degree Murder in connection to the death of 48-year-old Darin Mitchell (Champaign). Bond on the warrant is set at $5 million.

On Aug. 23, at approximately 9:10 p.m., Champaign Police responded to the 700 Block of N. Hickory Street following reports of a shooting. Police learned the shooting took place near the American Legion building entrance after a verbal argument turned physical. Arriving officers discovered Mitchell suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Mitchell was transported to an area hospital and taken into surgery but would later succumb to his injuries. Russell fled the scene before officers arrived.

Champaign Police are actively working to locate Russell and to learn more about the circumstances leading to the Aug. 23 homicide. Detectives are requesting to speak with anyone who may have information on Russell’s whereabouts or pertaining to Mitchell’s murder. Detectives will arrange to speak privately with you.
