The Champaign Fire Department Building Safety Division has again been awarded a Class 3 rating by the Insurance Services Office (ISO), an organization that independently evaluates building codes in communities across the United States. ISO uses the Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule (BCEGS) to assign each municipality a classification from 1 to 10. Class 1 represents exemplary commitment to building code enforcement. Three primary categories are evaluated to determine the rating – administration of codes, plan review division and inspection division. Municipalities with well-enforced, up to date codes should demonstrate better loss experience from individual events or Citywide natural disasters, and insurance rates can reflect that.
In 2016, the Champaign Fire Department was awarded a Class 1 Public Protection Classification by the ISO, which is a rating of the City’s fire protection services. The BCEGS rating is specific to building safety.
