Champaign Fire Department Stresses Planning Ahead of 2017 Fire Prevention Week

The Champaign Fire Department welcomes the public to celebrate Fire Prevention Week October 8-14. This year’s theme: Every Second Counts – Plan Two Ways Out.

Visit with Champaign firefighters at Market Place Mall on Sunday, October 8, from 11 am – 4 pm.  A Touch-A-Truck event will be held in the parking lot just outside the food court and inside the mall the Fire Department will have a Hazard House demonstration, safety materials, and a special visit from Freddie the Fire Truck.

A matter of seconds can mean the difference between escaping safely from a fire and tragedy.  Use these tips to make one today:

  • Draw a map of your home showing all doors and windows. Use it to create and review an escape plan with everyone in the home.
  • Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible.
  • Identify a family meeting place a safe distance from your home.
  • Practice your home escape plan at least twice a year.

Remember, when your smoke alarm sounds, get out and stay out. If you must escape through smoke, stay low and close to the ground.  Make sure everyone makes it out and call 911 immediately.
