Champaign Fire Department Ice Rescue Training

The Champaign Fire Department will be conducting Ice Rescue Training January 20-22, 2015 at Mattis Park on Devonshire Drive in Champaign. Crews will respond to a report of a victim that has fallen through the ice and will perform a rescue of the victim (s).

There will be two sessions daily at 8:30 and 10:00am in order to rotate all on-duty crews through the drill. Media is encouraged to attend. Parking is available at 2109 Fox Dr., Amdocs Parking Lot.

CFD would like to remind you of the following safety tips:

  • Anytime you are out in cold weather it is important to dress appropriately in layers. Cold temperatures, wind and wet clothes can cause severe hypothermia in just minutes of exposure.
  • Never walk on ice that has not been checked by an experienced professional.
  • Snow-covered ice can be deceiving. The snow can hide ice that is not thick enough to walk on.
  • CFD would like to remind everyone that ice fishing and ice skating is dangerous and not allowed on any of the Champaign Park Districts lakes.
